Chapter XVIII The Oxford and Cambridge Magazine In an earlier chapter I made a passing reference to the Oxford and Cambridge Magazine of 1856, a reference that the reader might easily overlook. It was a monthly magazine, written by very youthful members of the two Universities, which, half a century ago, ran the brief course of a single year and ceased to be. During its short life a few of the discerning prized it as having qualities beyond the ordinary. Some there were who, for various reasons, tried to admire and enjoy it, but found themselves unable; while others were disposed to jeer at the principles and sentiments it expressed, and at the ardour and simplicity of the writers. So, at the end of a twelve-month, it died for want of circulation, a disease for which there is no remedy, a sentence against which there is no appeal. Naturally it is now very seldom to be met with. Such copies as have survived are mostly in the hands of those who value them, and a complete set is counted a treasure. To me, indeed, the volume is half sacred and wholly dear. No book that I possess has more associations, or wakens more memories of early days, of the objects of my boyish admiration and love, and of a glorious springtime, in which all things were full of life, and beauty, and delight. Ineffective as it was in its day, I do not think that any true lover of literature in our own time, coming unexpectedly upon a few old numbers of it, and knowing nothing of their origin, could fail to be struck with the tone, the style, the intellectual distinction of the writing, and even more with its moral and spiritual characteristics.
