This story takes place in the mountains of Tennessee in the early 1930's. The main character, Madeline, is the local doctor for an area of several hundred miles. She's not hindered by her lack of education or license. Her abilities allowed her to handle any medical situations and she never worked for money, only goods. Until one day, when another Doctor sets up practice in a small town in the foothills. His unwavering greed to handle all the medical care for the entire area, threatens to end Madeline's career in medicine. She is arrested, due to the underhandedness of her very capable adversary Doctor Stamcove's efforts. Madeline's tried, convicted, and ordered not practice medicine for as long as she lives. This punishment to her was worse than being put to death. In the end, things happen to change the outcome of this story, due to an incredible discovery.
